Grass/Brush Fires Keep Spirit Lake Firefighters Busy

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Grass and brush fires kept Spirit Lake firefighters on the run Sunday.

Fire Chief Wally Jorgenson says the first call came around 12:15 p.m. when they were called to a large grass and brush fire on the south side of Center Lake. Jorgenson says the blaze, fanned by winds gusting over 40 miles-per-hour, quickly spread to several piles of lumber and other grass areas. It took firefighters about two hours to extinguish.

As they were getting that blaze taken care of, Jorgenson says they were called to a grass fire along the beach at Marble Beach Campground on the west side of Big Spirit Lake.

Firefighters were called back to that area around 6:00 p.m. to extinguish a flare-up.

No injuries were reported in the blazes.

Jorgenson says the high wind made it very difficult to contain the blazes.

He says the half-inch or so of rain that fell in Sunday evening’s thunderstorms should help ease the fire danger over the next few days. More rain is in the forecast for Tuesday.
