SL Bd. Of Adjustment Denies PUD; Approves Communication Tower

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A proposal to build a planned unit development consisting of a complex of vacation rental townhouses in Spirit Lake is officially dead.

The city’s Board of Adjustment Monday voted unanimously in favor of a city council recommendation to deny a special exception use permit for the proposed project.

Plans had called for the project to be constructed just east of the Oaks Motel. Residents in that area opposed the proposed project, fearing it would cause problems with noise, traffic, pollution and other issues.

The Spirit Lake Board of Adjustment also Monday granted a special exception use permit to Dickinson county allowing the construction of a new communications tower in conjunction with the courthouse project. The 180-foot tower and an accessory building will be built southwest of the former Baptist Church at 1900 Ithaca Avenue. Supervisor Paul Johnson told the board it’s crucial the new tower be erected by this time a year from now. That’s when the existing tower is slated to be torn down to make way for the courthouse project.

The Board of Adjustment unanimously approved the special exception use after receiving no oral or written opposition from neighbors.
