(Milford)– The Milford City Council voted unanimously Monday for the city NOT to get out of the garbage collection business…atleast for now.
Milford and Okoboji put out requests for proposals for garbage collection services a couple months ago. They wanted to see if it would be more cost effective to have a private firm perform the service.
After reviewing a cost analysis, the Milford city council Monday decided not to contract out for the service. Several council members said the savings by having an outside company provide the service simply wouldn’t be enough to warrant a change.
Council member Teresa Netsch recommended the city re-visit the issue when its recycling contract expires in several years.
Some council members also questioned how city workers who currently work in the sanitation department would be kept busy if the city no longer picked up trash.
The council had reviewed proposals from two firms: Town and Country of Rock Rapids and Waste Management, Incorporated.
The Okoboji City Council has yet to act on the matter.
