Spencer Council Approves Menard’s Annexation

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– The Spencer city council Monday evening unanimously adopted a resolution for the voluntary annexation of the 80 acre site of the future Menard’s store into city limits.

City Manager Dean Torreson says the next step is to rezone the land to commercial. And he says a developer’s agreement on proposed improvements to Highway 71 in that area is expected to come before the council at their first meeting in July. Torresen says that agreement would spell out who’s responsible for what improvements to the road. But Torresen says it already looks like most of it will fall on the city’s shoulders. He’s hopeful a bid on the project could be let yet this fall, with some earthwork getting underway before the snow flies. He’s hopeful it can be completed by September, 2005.

In other business, the Spencer city council authorized staff to send out requests for proposals to develop 30 lots on the Spencer Municipal Golf Course. Torreson says the city has 13 acres of prime land in that area up for sale, designated for residential development. Torreson says he’s already been contacted by two local developers that are interested in purchasing the land, and that they’ve been presented with cost estimates to extend infrastructure to that area. The city has yet to set a price on the lots.

Torreson expects to start bringing proposals from interested contractors to the city council at their June 7th meeting.
