Low Water Levels Cause Concern For Boaters

November 22, 2014

(Wahpeton)– The last several years of below normal precipitation are catching up with the Iowa Great Lakes.

Gary Owen of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says it’s resulted in a significant drop in water levels. He says the Iowa Great Lakes are about 11 inches below crest of the spillway at Lower Gar Lake. And they continue to drop.

As a result, Owen says some things that shouldn’t showing up are…such as rock piles, reefs and sand bars. And he says they pose a real risk to boaters.

Owen says they’ve done what they can to mark some of the worse problem areas with black and white vertically striped buoys. He says some of the worse problem areas are with reefs at Pillsbury Point, Pikes Point, Gull Point and Manhattan on West Lake Okoboji and Big Stony and Little Stony Points on Big Spirit Lake.

Owen says he had no reports of anyone having any problems during last weekend’s Great Walleye Weekend.
