(Spirit Lake)– Iowa Lakes Community College will be asking for more taxpayer money in a special election to be held this coming September.
The college’s board of trustees, meeting Tuesday evening in Spirit Lake, reported that they’ll be asking the public to support a six-cent equipment levy.
College President Mike Hupfer says the additional revenue would be restricted to the purchase of equipment and may not be used for salaries or buildings.
Hupfer says the increase would amount ot about an additional $2.80 per year for a 100-thousand dollar homeowner.
In other business, the trustees heard from Aileen Schacherer, who’s retiring as Director of the Spirit Lake campus; and they approved the bid of 1,874,000-dollars from the Vestas Company for a wind turbine to be erected in Estherville for the college’s new Wind Energy and Turbine Program scheduled to start this fall.
They also approved a 66,300-dollar bid from Christensen Construction to build a 30 by 80 foot addition at the Algona campus. It will consist of additional labs and classrooms.
Trustees also set June 17th at 1:30 p.m. as the date and time to accept bids on the proposed rennovation of the old student center for the Criminal Justice/Computer Forensics program at the Estherville campus. A public hearing on the proposed project is set for 4:00 p.m. June 22nd.
