Texas Man Seriously Injured In Highway 86 Rollover

(Spirit Lake)– A Texas man was seriously injured in a one-vehicle accident Tuesday evening on Highway 86 a quarter of a mile south of the Iowa/Minnesota stateline.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office says 42-year-old Alton Newell the third of El Paso, Texas lost control of a 2004 Buick van. Authorities say Newell over-corrected when the two right-side tires went off the road. The vehicle went into the ditch where it rolled three times.

Newell, who was alone in the vehicle, was transported by ambulance to Lakes Regional Healthcare. He was transferred by helicopter to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Information on his condition wasn’t immediately available.

Newell was charged with operating while intoxicated, open container and failure to maintain control.

Damage to the vehicle was estimated at 20-thousand dollars.

The mishap took place around 8:45 p.m.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Spirit Lake, Lake Park and Okoboji Police Departments.
