(Spirit Lake)– Severe weather again wreaked havoc in portions of the region Wednesday evening.
Severe thunderstorm and even tornado warnings were issued for several counties in northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota.
Tornado warnings were issued for portions of Lyon county in northwest Iowa and Rock and Jackson counties in southwest Minnesota. Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes in those areas. While there were numerous reports of funnel clouds, no touchdowns were reported.
There were also several reports of three-quarter inch hail in Nobles county near Brewster.
The Iowa Great Lakes was on the very southern edge of the activity. But there was still plenty of vivid lightning and some ominous clouds (see photo from Milford).
The National Weather Service says things should be quiet today and tomorrow, with warmer temperatures. More severe weather is in the forecast for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend. Right now it looks like the greatest threat for severe thunderstorms would be late Saturday night and Sunday.
