(Spencer)– A broken rail has been sited as the cause of a train derailment east of Spencer earlier this week.
Officials with the Iowa, Chicago and Eastern Railroad Corporation say five cars loaded with soybean meal went off the tracks, spilling their loads.
Lynn Anderson, Vice President of Marketing for the Iowa, Chicago and Eastern, says it appears the rail broke as the eastbound 57-car train passed over it.
A derailment occurred in the same area last fall.
Anderson acknowledges the rail in that area is getting old. He says the railroad plans to do some work in that area this summer.
No injuries were reported in Monday’s derailment.
Crews have been working throughout the week to clean up the mess.
