(Spirit Lake)– Ponds of water standing in ditches and fields after torrential rains the past couple of weeks have some wondering if we’re in for a repeat of 1993.
Todd Heitkamp of the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls says even though we’ve received more rain than typical, that it’s still nowhere close to what happened in 1993. Heitkamp says there were several other factors present then that aren’t now.
Heitkamp says the weather pattern we’ve been experiencing is actually pretty typical for this time of year. He says it may seem a little harsher because of drier springs we’ve experienced the past couple of years.
Some parts of the region have received in excess of five inches of rain in the past week or so. It’s helped boost levels of the Iowa Great Lakes, but it’s also caused flooding in some areas…including the Little Sioux River in Spencer and Linn Grove.
