Sidewalks To Be Topic At Spirit Lake Public Meeting

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Should sidewalks be mandated throughout the city of Spirit Lake?

That will be the topic of discussion at a public meeting the city council will host Tuesday (6/15) at the Dickinson County Community Building in Spirit Lake.

Currently, sidewalks are not required in many areas of the city. However, they have been included in some recent subdivisions. They have also been constructed in areas that see a lot of pedestrian traffic, such as along Hill Avenue, and in the vicinity of schools.

But now, proponents of sidewalks say more are needed in the city, siting safety concerns for children and others walking in streets.

Opponents say some areas of town were laid out without having sidewalks in mind. They add property owners would have to pay for sidewalks and maintain them. And they say constructing the sidewalks in some areas would be especially difficult due to terrain and other obstacles, such as trees and landscaping.

Tuesday’s meeting begins at 6:00 p.m.
