Grants Awarded For Local Disability Projects

(Des Moines)– Some local communities have been awarded grants to help with projects designed to assist those with disabilities.

35-thousand dollars is being awarded to nine Iowa communities through the federal government’s Administration on Developmental Disabilities, the Iowa Governor’s Developmental Disabilities Council and the Center for Disabilities and Development at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Algona’s “Wheelin’ and Reelin’” project was awarded five thousand dollars to build an unloading pad and walkway from an existing parking lot to a fishing dock. The project also includes landscaping and benches.

The Lighthouse Project in Buena Vista county was awarded five thousand dollars to develop a consortium of local service providers to support people with disabilities in their homes after being discharged from an inpatient setting.

Cherokee’s “Let’s Learn Together” program was awarded 4,750-dollars to implement its semester-long “Learning About Life” curriculum in a local elementary school.

And Spencer’s “Catch’em at the Dock” program was awarded five thousand dollars to build a disability-accessibly dock at Stolley’s Pond.

According to grant guidelines, all of the projects are to be completed by this coming December.
