Spencer Council Adopts Burning Ordinance

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– Spencer residents that like to burn yard waste can no longer do so without facing a citation from police.

The city council Monday unanimously adopted an ordinance restricting open burning within city limts. The measure came about after numerous complaints from residents about leaf and brush burning.

There are a few exceptions to the burning ordinance: recreational fires are still allowed for cooking purposes; fires for training purposes will be allowed; the city will still be able to burn waste at the disposal site on the north edge of town; and certain civic groups will be allowed to hold ceremonial burns with permission from the Fire Department.

Fire Chief Doug Duncan says he hopes to have informational packets available soon.

In other business, the Spencer city council voted to purchase five outdoor warning sirens. They’ll be located at the city’s two golf courses; Pederson Park, East Leach Park and the fairgrounds.

The city has budgeted 100-thousand dollars to cover the purchase and installation of the sirens. City Manager Dean Torreson says they’ll borrow money from the General Fund and pay it back with Local Option Sales Tax money over the next few years.

Torreson says it will probably be late this year before the sirens are installed.
