SL Council Votes To Have Engineering Study Done On Pedestrian Underpass

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake city council Tuesday voted unanimously to go ahead with an engineering study on a proposal to build a pedestrian underpass under Highways nine and 71 near the East Okoboji Bridge on the city’s east side. The cost of the study is 30,600-dollars. But that may go up if the city decides to include other options in the study. The proposed project has a total estimated construction cost of 360-thousand dollars.

City officials say the pedestrian underpass is needed for safety reasons. They cite a huge increase in pedestrians in that area with a new fishing pier and recreational trail that’s nearing completion.

They plan to get the D-N-R involved in the project and are hopeful the agency may be able to help provide some funding.

The council also unanimously approved the reappointment of Mary Conner to the Library Board and appointed Cheri O’Hagan to a seat previously held by Katherine Owens, who did not seek re-appointment.

The council approved a proposal to pay 3,400-dollars for drainage repair near the pumphouse in Orleans; and they approved a proposal to install three new street lights in the Points North Addition south of Peoria Avenue at a cost not to exceed four thousand dollars.
