Sioux City Woman Injured In West Okoboji Water Skiing Accident

November 22, 2014

(Wahpeton)– The Okoboji Fire and Rescue boat was used in its first official call this (Saturday) afternoon.

Authorities received a cell phone call from West Lake Okoboji where a water skier was cut by a boat propeller.

D-N-R Lakes Patrol Officer Gary Owen says 23-year-old Donna Van Grootheest of Sioux City was cut on her leg when a malfunctioning prop continued to spin when it appeared the motor was in neutral.

The victim already had a cold compress on her leg when authorities arrived. She was taken to shore where she was transported by ambulance to Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake.

The mishap took place around 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the Harbor area of West Lake Okoboji.

Arnolds Park and Okoboji Fire and Rescue Departments, paramedics from Spirit Lake and Lakes Regional Healthcare and the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office assisted the D-N-R.
