Spencer School Board Approves Land Purchase

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– The Spencer school board has decided to purchase nearly an acre of land south of the high school for future expansion.

The board held a public hearing Monday on the proposal.

The land at 718 East First Street is currently occupied by the United Pentecostal Church.

Superintendent Greg Ebeling says the land fits in with the district’s long-range vision for facilities at the high school, including an auditorium, additional parking, additional storage space, an area for athletic practices and physical education classes, and storage space for athletic equipment.

Some at Monday’s hearing spoke out against the land purchase proposal. Spencer realtor Wayne Workman told the board the land would better be used for homes, siting a shortage of affordable housing in the city.

After going into closed session to discuss the purchase, the board voted unanimously to purchase the land and church structure for 95-thousand dollars.

The United Pentecostal Church will be moving to the former Stub’s Ranch Kitchen acreage south of Spencer.
