(Spirit Lake)– As of right now there are still more questions than answers when it comes to the investigation into Monday’s fatal boating accident on West Lake Okoboji.
Marty Eby, Recreational Safety Officer for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is heading up the investigation. He tells KUOO news it’s still too early in the investigation to answer a number of questions…including who was driving the two boats involved and who was in each one. Eby says they’re still trying to interview those involved and witnesses. Eby says they’re also still analyzing physical evidence.
As of right now, he says no charges have been filed. Eby says that won’t happen until the final stages of their investigation…which he says could take several weeks atleast. He says corroborating statements and analyzing and testing equipment will consume a lot of time.
Eby says this ranks as one of the worst boating accidents he’s investigated over his career. He says the last time such an incident occured in the Iowa Great Lakes was in 1990.
Eby says they’re going to do all they can to determine a cause so as to hopefully avoid such an incident from occuring again.
