DNR Releases Names Of Those Involved In Deadly Boating Accident On West Lake Okoboji

(Spirit Lake)– The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has released the names of those involved in a fatal boating accident Monday.

They say six-year-old Kathryn Mills of Johnston was pronounced dead at the scene of the mishap…which took place around 10:30 a.m. when two boats collided near Manhattan Beach.

Injured were 53-year-old Kay McCormick, 12-year-old Abby McCormick, and 12-year-old Taylor Maurer…all of Sioux City; 60-year-old Merlyn DeBoer, 64-year-old Rodney Burgeson and 64-year-old Lorna Burgeson…all of Spirit Lake; 42-year-old Robyn Mills, 11-year-old Elizabeth Mills and nine-year-old Andrew Mills…all of Johnston; and Brooke Burgeson…age unknown…from Apple Valley, Minnesota.

A news release issued by the DNR doesn’t say who was driving.

All 10 were taken to Lakes Regional Healthcare. As of earlier this (Tues.) afternoon, hospital officials weren’t releasing names with conditions. They were only saying that of the five adults, three remained hospitalized in fair condition. The other two were treated and have since been released. All five children were treated and have since been released.

Rod Slings, Recreational Safety Program Supervisor for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says this is the first boating related fatality in the Iowa Great Lakes in 14 years.

The DNR is being assisted in its investigation by the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office.
