DNR Sites State Law For Not Releasing Full Details Into Fatal Boat Accident

November 22, 2014

(Wahpeton)– Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources say a state law is preventing them from releasing full details into Monday’s boating accident on West Lake Okoboji that killed a six year-girl and injured 10 other people.

The DNR says the state law bans public release of accident reports–making them available only to law officers, parties involved in the accident and insurance companies.

Officials say releasing the information could prevent future accidents.

State Senator David Johnson of Ocheyedan told KUOO news efforts to repeal that law in the past have failed.

But House Speaker Chris Rants says he’d consider a change to the law.
