Mayor: Search For New SL Police Chief To Get Underway Very Soon

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The search for a new Spirit Lake Police Chief will get underway very soon. That word from Mayor Eric Nielsen.

As KUOO news reported Tuesday, Jon Martyr has resigned to become a police lieutenant in Corvallis, Oregon. That’s where he came from originally when he went to work as a deputy for the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office. After a year or two in that capacity, Martyr was hired as Spirit Lake Police Chief.

Mayor Nielsen read Martyr’s resignation letter at Tuesday’s city council meeting. Nielsen said Martyr will be greatly missed, adding that he left the department “in great shape. It’s as strong and healthy as it’s ever been.” Nielsen said he wishes Martyr well on his future.

Martyr’s resignation is effective August 31st, but Nielsen said he’ll be leaving the community already this coming Monday.

Nielsen said he’d like to hire a consultant to assist in the process of finding a replacement, similar to what the city has done in the past. Nielsen said he’ll bring the matter to the next council meeting for further discussion.
