November 22, 2014

(Jackson, Mn.)– Sentencing for a Lakefield, Minnesota woman who has pleaded guilty in the shooting death of a Spirit Lake man is set for later this month.

In a plea agreement, Suzanne McNulty admitted to second-degree unintentional murder in the shooting death of 34-year-old Ervin Berg of Spirit Lake.

Jackson County Attorney Robert O’Connor says McNulty will be ordered to serve 180 months at the Minnesota Women’s Prison in Shakopee when she’s sentenced at 2:00 p.m. August 30th.

McNulty was holding a 12 gauge shotgun when it went off, striking Berg in the throat. He died from a rapid loss of blood.

McNulty and Berg had been in a relationship for several months.

The incident took place at a homestead in Hunter Township south of Lakefield. The owner of the homestead allowed McNulty to stay there while he was away driving truck. He found Berg’s body when he returned and called authorities.
