(Spirit Lake)– Many residents woke up this (Wed.) morning only to find their basements flooded. And in some cases, they were flooded with more than just water. There have been several reports of sewer back-ups, especially in Spirit Lake. City officials are pleading with residents to use as little water as possible to give lift stations a chance to catch up.
It’s the result of anywhere from eight to 12 inches of rain that’s fallen on the region since Monday evening. Most of that came in the last 24 hours.
Street flooding was widespread throughout the region, especially in Spirit Lake. There were no reports of any major highways in the area being closed to flooding. There were reports earlier this (Wed.) morning that traffic on the westbound lanes of Highways nine and 71 near Hy-Vee in Spirit Lake was limited to one lane as a detention pond in that are was overflowing.
The good news is that the heavy rain has finally exited the region. Light showers are still possible, but officials don’t think it will aggravate flooding already going on.
