Future Of Harris School Building Remains Uncertain

November 22, 2014

(Lake Park)– The future of the former school building in Harris remains uncertain, even after Thursday’s special meeting of the Harris-Lake Park school board.

The board was supposed to consider bids for the demolition of the entire building or for everything except the gymnasium. But Superintendent Tim Christiansen says only one bid was received, and the board voted not to open it.

In addition, Christiansen says there was a delegation of residents at Thursday’s meeting that wants to save the gym. Christiansen says the board is giving the group until October 14 to come up with a proposal. Christiansen says the board will hold a public hearing at 7:00 p.m. that evening on various resolutions to dispose or sell the building; another public hearing will be held at 7:30 that evening on new bids to demolish all or just a portion of the building.

The building has been sitting empty since elementary students started attending classes in Lake Park this fall.
