Cashier’s Check Scam Claims Some Local Victims

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– If you’re advertising items for sale on the internet, you need to be aware of a new scam that apparently is originating from abroad.

Dickinson County Sheriff Greg Baloun says it involves fake cashiers checks. Baloun says the perpetrator(s) purchase the items online and make out cashier’s check for more than the amount that’s asked for. He says the person from whom the merchandise is purchased is then supposed to pay the courier and send the overage back to the purchaser, only to find out after the fact the cashiers check is no good.

Baloun says if you’ve been a victim of such a scam you should contact your local law enforcement agency. But he says it is nearly impossible to get the money back since it probably went overseas.

Baloun says his office has had reports of this happening to some local residents.
