(Okoboji)– Saying it’s a county issue, neither the Spirit Lake or Okoboji city council will take a stance on a controversial rezoning request involving land on the southeast side of East Lake Okoboji.
Two Sioux Falls developers are proposing to build several condominium complexes on the site along with an indoor water park. It’s drawn fire from environmentalists who feel it will put too much pressure on the lake. The developers say the proposed project is intended to take pressure OFF the lake…and that the population density they’re proposing would be much less than what’s allowed under county zoning for a resort enterprise district–the zoning classification that they’re seeking.
Representatives of the Inter Lake Protective Association were present at Tuesday’s respective city council meetings in Okoboji and Spirit Lake requesting the cities urge the board of supervisors to vote no on the request at a public hearing they’ll be holding this coming Tuesday. The concensus among both councils was that the cities should take no action since it’s a county issue. Instead, they’re encouraging residents with concerns on either side of the issue to contact the supervisors individually or attend the March 15th public hearing.
