Spirit Lake Man Sentenced For Sexually Exploiting A Child

November 22, 2014

(Sioux City)– A Spirit Lake man has been sentenced to 14 years in federal prison for sexually exploiting a child.

44-year-old Scott Sweet was recently sentenced in U-S District Court in Sioux City after pleading guilty to one count of sexual exploitation of a child.

At the plea hearing, court officials say Sweet admitted that from November 2001 and continuing until early 2002 he coerced a girl under the age of 16 to engage in sexually explicit conduct for the purpose of producing a visual picture of such conduct.

Court documents say Sweet, posing as a teenage boy, did this while communicating with the minor over the internet.

Sweet also admitted that in December 2001 he secretly filmed another minor girl as she used his bathroom to take a shower.

In addition to the 14-year prison term Sweet was ordered to pay more than 100-thousand dollars in restitution and must serve a 10-year term of supervised release after the prison term.

Sweet is being held in the custody of a U-S Marshal until he can be transported to a federal prison.
