(Des Moines)– A state audit into the city of Spirit Lake’s financial records for the past two years is wrapping up.
Susan Batanni of the State Auditor’s Office tells KUOO news they’re now waiting for the city to respond to some of the findings before finalizing their report. She’s hoping to hear something back within the next week or two.
The special probe into the city’s finances was the result of a petition with 64 signatures on it that was presented at a council meeting on January 13th of this year. It called for a state audit going back just one year. But the council voted four-to-one to extend the audit over a two-year period instead.
It’s the first time since 1996 the state has audited the city of Spirit Lake’s financial records.
