(Lake Park)– The gymnasium of the former Harris school building has a new owner.
The Harris-Lake Park school board voted Monday evening to sell the gym and the land on which the school building stands in Harris to the Harris Economic Development Corporation for a dollar.
The board took the action following a public hearing.
The HEDC plans to convert the former gym into a community-rec and youth athletic facility.
Christiansen says the deal becomes final when the paperwork is signed, which should happen soon.
Christiansen says the group plans to start using the gym a little later this winter. He says the group is currently installing a boiler in the facility.
Christiansen says the remainder of the Harris school building remains on schedule for demolition this coming spring. Asbestos is currently being removed from the building. Christiansen says the Sibley company awarded the contract to tear down the building will spend the winter removing salvageable items from it.
