Friends & Family Pay Tribute To Fallen Northwest Iowa Soldier

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– It was an emotional scene Wednesday evening as family and friends gathered to pay tribute to a fallen northwest Iowa Soldier.

Nearly 120 people packed a Spencer funeral home to honor and remember a young man who died while defending his country. Both Iowa and Florida National Guard leaders hosted a ceremony Wednesday evening for 20-year-old Specialist Daryl Davis formerly of Spencer.

Davis was killed in a military motor vehicle accident in Iraq November 29th while serving as a member of the 144th Transportation Company of the Florida National Guard.

Nearly 25 of Davis’ family attended the service including his mother, Dana Davis of Spencer, and his father, Richard Rizato of Puerto Rico.

At the beginning of the service military officials presented a military coin to both parents in honor of Daryl’s exceptional service that went beyond the call of duty.

Brigadier General Michael Flemming of the Florida Guard presented Dana Davis with several awards that her son earned posthumously including the bronze star, the Florida Cross, the Army’s Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terror Service Medal, and a Defendor of Freedom packet.
