(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake city council says it will go over a re-audit of the city’s finances by the State Auditor’s Office with a fine-tooth comb.
The city council Tuesday decided to meet with a representative of the State Auditor’s Office regarding the report. A date for the meeting, which will be open to the public, hasn’t been set.
The report cited the city for undocumented expenses from several unauthorized checking accounts, among other things.
On a related matter, Orleans Mayor Carlton Mitchell requested the city of Spirit Lake cease the practice of imposing water meter rental fees on the residents and non-residents of Orleans and that all monies from when the fees were implemented in March of 2000, including the 50 cents per meter retained by the city of Spirit Lake, plus interest held by Spirit Lake, be paid to the city of Orleans. The State Audit report also makes reference to that. Spirit Lake Mayor Eric Nielsen told Mitchell the matter will be referred to the Utility Committee.
