Suspect Held In SW Mn. Fatal Shooting

November 22, 2014

(Windom, Mn.)– The Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Office is holding a suspect in connection with Friday’s fatal shooting at a Mountain Lake business.

Authorities say the suspect, a 30-year-old man from Odin, allegedly went to Fast Distributing and shot a co-worker twice with a shotgun–once in the face and once in the hip.

The victim, 57-year-old Howard Owen Hockel, also of rural Odin, was pronounced dead a short time later.

The suspect was arrested following a short chase by the Minnesota State Patrol. He worked part-time at the farm spray equipment maker.

Assistant Cottonwood County Attorney Nick Anderson says the suspect could be facing a second degree murder charge. An initial court appearance has been tentatively set for Monday morning.

Cottonwood County Sheriff Bob Hayken says the suspect and Hockel had farmed together and had an existing bad relationship.
