After Record Warmth, Significant Winter Weather May Finally Hit

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– There’s a saying that goes “if you don’t like the weather in northwest Iowa or southwest Minnesota, stick around a day…it’ll change”. That certainly has been the case in the past 24 hours.

After record high temperatures Thursday, a canadian cold front is knocking us back into reality today (Friday). After hitting 55 Thursday, Friday’s high is only expected to reach 32 degrees.

Our snow-free winter may be about to end as well. The National Weather Service says a shift in the jetstream will start steering some potent storms from the west coast our way. The first is expected New Year’s Day and Saturday night…with freezing rain likely. After a brief respite Sunday and Monday, the Weather Service says there will be a potential for a significant snow storm Tuesday and Wednesday.

Anyone with travel plans for the first half of next week is advised to stay abreast of later forecasts.
