Snow Storm Closes Schools

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Students are getting an unexpected vacation day today (Wednesday) thanks to old man winter.

The first major snow storm of the season has resulted in many schools in northwest Iowa closing for the day.

Three and-a-half inches of snow had fallen on the Iowa Great Lakes as of 7:00 a.m. this morning. That’s the total since it started Tuesday.

An additional three to five inches is expected on top of that today (Wed.). A northeast wind of 15 to 25 mph is enough to whip around the light fluff in open areas, causing considerable ground drifting in places.

Anyone that must travel today (Wed.) should allow for plenty of extra time and be sure to have a winter survival kit.

Most of the measurable snow should be over with by midnight tonight (Wed.).
