(Arnolds Park)– There may be snow, but ice conditions for this weekend’s University of Okoboji Winter Games are described as ideal.
Gary Owen of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says ice in Smith’s Bay…where most of the activities are headquartered again this year…is a good two feet thick. And he says it’s extremely smooth. He’s urging those driving or walking on the ice to use extreme caution. Ice cleats are recommended for those planning to set foot on the ice.
Owen says he’s had no reports of open water or pressure ridges anywhere on West Lake Okoboji.
On East Lake Okoboji, a huge flocks of geese has kept the extreme northern part of the lake open all winter.
