ILCC Wind Turbine Going Up

November 22, 2014

(Estherville)– There’s been a noticeable change in the last day or two on the skyline on the southeast side of Estherville.

A two million dollar Vestas wind turbine is being erected just south of Iowa Lakes Community College on South 19th Street.

Delaine Hiney, Executive Director of Plant Services at ILCC, says the turbine will play a valuable roll in ILCC’s new Wind Energy and Turbine Technology Program. She says students will be trained on how to climb the tower; how to do rescues from it and being able to bring individuals down from the top of it who may be hurt; and troubleshooting and repairs.

Hiney says the Vestas MN82 wind turbine is state-of-the-art and is currently the largest available…with a total height of 375 feet.

Hiney says the energy produced by the turbine will be sold to Estherville Municipal Utilities, which in turn will sell the power back to the college.

Hiney says the wind turbine will be commissioned February 14th.
