SL School Board Reviews New Budget Cut Ideas

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Meeting in special session Thursday, the Spirit Lake school board reviewed a new list of proposed budget cuts, and took another look at a list presented earlier.

As we reported earlier, the district needs to trim between 200-thousand and 250-thousand dollars from its budget to make ends meet.

Superintendent Tim Grieves says the new list of proposed cuts presented Thursday deal with administration and the central office. Reducing teacher associates through attrition is also on the new list.

Grieves says they’re still open to further budget cutting ideas from administrators, staff and the public, but says the time to make a final decision is quickly approaching. Grieves says the board will make a final decision on reductions at its meeting April 11th.

The board Thursday heard from teacher and Education Association representative Denny Perry who was critical of the process that was used to identify potential cuts. He also called on parents in the district to step up and become more involved in their children’s education. Perry urged the board to use caution as they consider the reductions, and that a futuristic approach be used in deciding which cuts to actually pursue.
