Iowa Great Lakes Declared Ice-Free

November 22, 2014

(Arnolds Park)– It’s official: the ice has gone out of the Iowa Great Lakes for another season.

Kirk Ewen of Arnolds Park keeps track of when the lakes freeze and the ice goes out each year. He says the last ice went out of West Lake Okoboji Thursday (3/31) while East Lake Okoboji was ice-free as of Tuesday (3/29). That compares with last year when the ice went out of East Lake Okoboji March 26th and West Lake on March 27th.

Unless you have a wet suit, it’s still a bit early to think about taking a dip in the lakes. Water temperatures are only around 40 degrees.
