(Gruver)– The tiny Emmet county town of Gruver will be the scene of an elaborate disaster exercise this coming Saturday, April 9th.
Terry Reekers, Coordinator of the Emmet County Emergency Management Agency, says the drill will simulate a collision between a school bus and an anhydrous ammonia tanker/truck with mass casualties.
Reekers says there will be a voluntary evacuation of the entire town of Gruver. As an incentive, coffee and cookies will be made available to residents who participate at a mock shelter at city hall.
Reekers says the drill will begin at about 1:00 p.m. Saturday and will take most of the afternoon.
Reekers says it isn’t their intent to scare anyone, but says it’s important to make the scenario as real as possible to get the true effect of trying to evacuate a community whether it’s for a natural disaster or act of terrorism.
Every emergency response crew in Emmet county will be participating in Saturday’s drill.
