(Arnolds Park)– Anglers from throughout the upper midwest are stocking up their tackle boxes and getting their rods and reels ready for this weekend’s “Great Walleye Weekend” in the Iowa Great Lakes.
Participants again this year will try to snag a specially tagged walleye worth 10-thousand dollars. There are six walleye that have the special 10-thousand dollar tags on them. The prize money will be split if more than one is caught. 18 other fish have tags for other prizes. You must be registered in the contest to collect if you happen to land one of the specially tagged fish.
As in past years, proceeds go to the Easter Seals of Iowa. Spokesman Charlie Skarlet says the event is a major fundraiser each year for the organization. Last year’s “Great Walleye Weekend” raised 20-thousand dollars for Easter Seals.
Skarlet says the money goes toward the various services Easter Seals provides to disabled persons in all of Iowa’s 99 counties.
The “Great Walleye Weekend” officially begins at a minute after midnight tonight (Fri.) and concludes with an awards ceremony and barbecue Sunday at the Dickinson County Expo Building on the fairgrounds in Spirit Lake.
A record number of 1,579 anglers participated in last year’s event. Organizers hope to top that this year.
