(Dickens)– Clay county authorities have seized property belonging to a Dickens man who owes thousands of dollars in drug tax stamps in connection with some narcotics violations.
Agents with the Iowa Department of Revenue and the Clay County Sheriff’s Office executed a distress warrant in the attempted recovery of 22-thousand dollars in tax debt from Kenneth Versluis of 117 Somers Street in Dickens.
Authorities say Versluis was ordered Wednesday to pay the debt, but was unable to do so. As a result, the distress warrant was executed on his residence. Property was levied and seized to be sold at auction at a later date. Any remaining debt will remain the responsibility of Versluis and interest will accrue until the debt is satisfied.
Officials with the Iowa Department of Revenue say such warrants to satisfy debt have not been a common occurrence, but they say they will become more common as the problem with unpaid narcotics taxes worsens.
Officials say in Clay county alone there are 15 people responsible for past narcotic tax debt.
Authorities were assisted by the Clay County Secondary Roads Department, which used a dump truck to pick up and move the property.
