Court Of Appeals Upholds Klaasen Conviction

November 22, 2014

(Des Moines)– The Iowa Court of Appeals has upheld the conviction of a Spirit Lake man in the murder of his young child.

Kory Klaasen was sentenced to 10 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of child endangerment.

In his appeal Klaasen claimed his trial attorney was ineffective and failed to raise the proper objections. The court of appeals rejected the claim, and noted Klaasen’s plea is supported by underlying facts and was knowing and voluntary.

The charge against Klaasen stemmed from March of 1998 when he was bathing his five month-old son when he dropped the child on his head. The next day the infant fell off a sofa. When taken to the hospital, it was discovered the boy had been without oxygen for 30 minutes.

Klaasen was found guilty in May of 1998 in Dickinson County District Court.
