Spencer Receives Cultural District Designation

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– The city of Spencer is now an official Cultural District in the eyes of the state.

Officials with the Department of Cultural Affairs traveled to Spencer Wednesday to present the city their official Culture District Designation.

The group “SPACE”, or the Spencer Alliance for a Creative Economy, has been working hard over the last year or so to become one of the state’s first Cultural Districts.

Anita Walker, Director of the state Cultural Department, says Spencer is a leader in the state for cities who want to establish a cultural district of their own.

Lieutenant Governor Sally Pederson told the crowd that being the first to establish a Cultural District is truly an honor.

At the end of Wednesday’s ceremony Pederson and Walker unveiled a new sign officially designating Spencer as a cultural district.

Many local groups are involved with SPACE, including the Spencer City Council, Spencer School District, Spencer Municipal Utilities, the Parker Museum, Mainstreet Association, Spencer Arts Association and Bogenrief Studios.
