School Bus/Pickup Crash Kills One; Injures 18 Others

November 22, 2014

(Algona)– A collision between a school bus and a pickup near Algona Tuesday has claimed the life of a Whittemore man and left 18 students with minor injuries.

The Iowa State Patrol says the mishap took place on Kossuth County Road B-40 about three miles west of Algona.

Authorities say 66-year-old John Jack Henry of Whittemore was the driver of the pickup. Both vehicles were westbound on B-40 when Henry slowed to turn into a farm drive. The school bus rear-ended the pickup truck.

Henry was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Mason City where he passed away Tuesday night. 18 of the 50 students on the bus were treated and released at Kossuth County Regional Medical Center. No injuries were reported to the bus driver, 72-year-old Harvey Steven of Algona.

Both the bus and the 2004 Ford pickup were totaled in the crash.

The incident remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
