November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A Spirit Lake teen has been charged with trying to kill a police officer in an incident this (Monday) afternoon at an apartment complex at 3 27th Street in Spirit Lake.

Police say three officers responded to apartment F-7 around 3:45 p.m. to execute a Juvenile Court Service pick-up order on 16-year-old Michael Wiest of Spirit Lake. As officers searched the apartment, they located Wiest hiding behind a bedroom door. Wiest then allegedly lunged at an officer and tried to stab him with a knife. Wiest also allegedly grabbed the officer by the throat, and a short fight ensued between Wiest and the officers. Wiest was eventually disarmed and taken into custody.

None of the officers were injured. Wiest was taken to Lakes Regional Healthcare where he was treated for exposure to pepper spray. Wiest was later transported to the Youth Detention Facility in Cherokee by the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office.

Wiest was charged with one count of attempt to commit murder of a peace officer…a class “B” felony; three counts of assault on a peace officer with a dangerous weapon…class “D” felonies; and one count of going armed with intent using a dangerous weapon…a class “D” felony.
