Okoboji Council Hears Possible Drainage Solutions

November 22, 2014

(Okoboji)– The Okoboji city council Tuesday reviewed possible options to solve a drainage problem in the Hayward’s Bay area.

Brad Beck, an engineer who’s been looking into the matter for the city, told the council the preferred option of lowering intakes and upsizing pipe comes with a high price tag–estimated at roughly 100-thousand dollars. Beck says there are a lot of houses in that area and most of the pipe would have to be bored under them. A much less expensive option, he says, would be to replace a curb cut in the same area with curb and gutter to re-route water to the intakes. It’s a much less expensive option, but Beck says it also isn’t a long-term solution to the problem, describing it more as a band-aid. The council directed Beck to look into that option further, along with the possibility of installing a rain garden in that area.

In other business, the Okoboji city council Tuesday approved a changeorder for the public safety building totaling an additional 4,320-dollars to upgrade some sand and salt storage bins. The council also learned that plumbing for the new building should be completed this week with grading and pouring of the floor scheduled for next week.

The council also Tuesday approved a Design Review Committee recommendation for Laurie Reding for the construction of a dog kennel, pet shop and grooming operation at the Ranch Amusement Park.
