(Spirit Lake)– July 19th is the earliest the Dickinson county board of supervisors could consider recommendations from the county’s Planning and Zoning Commission to rezone land on the northeast side of Big Spirit Lake near Sandbar Beach. The P & Z voted six-to-one in favor of making the recommendation at a meeting earlier this week. The commission voted unanimously in favor of a recommendation to approve a preliminary plat for the proposed development.
It was reported Tuesday that July 19th is the earlies tthe supervisors can act on the recommendations in order to meet the necessary deadlines to publish notices.
With two board members absent, the supervisors stopped short Tuesday of officially scheduling action on the recommendations. But atleast a couple of supervisors indicated the meeting should be held in the evening based on the amount of interest there is on the matter. About 50 people showed up Monday when the Planning and Zoning Commission took up the matter. The meeting had been moved to the Dickinson County Community Building to accomodate the crowd.
The request from Don and Nancy Yarns has drawn heavy opposition from environmentalists concerned a residential development would harm or destroy aquatic vegetation. Kirk Quinn, an attorney for the Yarns, said Monday the Yarns shouldn’t be held responsible for saving the lakes area environment, siting all of the other development that’s been going on in the area over the years.
