(Spencer)– The Spencer city council is a step closer to selling and vacating a portion of a city street to make room for the proposed expansion of Hy-Vee in the downtown area.
Meeting in special session Monday, the council unanimously approved the second reading of an ordinance to vacate and sell the 800 block of First Avenue West to Hy-Vee.
During their meeting June 6th, the council unanimously backed a development agreement for a new 50-thousand square foot Hy-Vee grocery store and adjacent gas station on land formerly occupied by Jubilee Foods. Hy-Vee hopes to start construction in the early spring of next year, with an estimated 11 month construction period.
Following the full council meeting Monday, the city’s Public Safety Committee met to discuss an asbestos removal proposal for the current fire station. Chandler Holland of the Institute for Environmental Assessment of Mankato presented a proposal to remove asbestos from piping and tile at an estimated cost of 24,100-dollars. The committee recommended approval. The council will consider the proposal at their next meeting July 5th.
