Boat Capsizes on Big Spirit: Two Teens Rescued; Search Continues For Third

November 22, 2014

(Orleans)– Two teen-aged boys were rescued from the water, but a third is missing after the boat they were in capsized this (Thurs.) morning on Big Spirit Lake.

The three boys were in a small 12-foot narrow, flat-bottomed boat with a small outboard motor when they encountered high winds and waves. The boat capsized east of Marble Beach. Two of the boys were able to hold onto a lifejacket until they were pulled from the water by a fisherman. It’s unknown how long they were in the water until they were rescued, but officials say it could have been up to two hours.

The third boy swam back to the upside down boat floating in the water, according to his companions, but later disappeared.

No names are being released yet.

A search for the missing boy continued late this (Thurs.) afternoon.

The Arnolds Park-Okoboji Underwater Search and Rescue, Arnolds Park-Okoboji fire boat, Spirit Lake Police Department, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Spirit Lake Police Department and the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office were called to the scene around 10:50 a.m.

Authorities say none of the three were wearing life jackets at the time of the incident, although there were atleast two on board–the one the two boys clung to until rescued and another found with the boat when it was recovered.
