(Spencer)– If you’re interested in local history and railroads, an author that has ties to the area has a new book you’d be interested in.
Don Hofsomer has published his latest book titled “Steel Trails of Hawkeyeland–Iowa’s Railroad Experience”.
Hofsomer says the book examines the time period from when railways first came to Iowa up until the present time. He says the book was a natural to him, as he’s always had a love for railroads.
Hofsomer has written several other books on local history and railroading, including one 25 years ago titled “Prairie Oasis” that pertains specifically to the Iowa Great Lakes area. A more recent book he wrote depicts the history of the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railway that served several local towns including Estherville, Terril, Spencer and Storm Lake.
In his books, Hofsomer relives the glory and challenges of railroading…something many of us take for granted in this day and age.
Hofsomer is a native of northwest Iowa. He was born in Fort Dodge; grew up in Spencer and graduated from Spencer High School. From there he went to the Iowa State Teacher’s College for a B-A and M-A and to Oklahoma State for a PHD. He also worked on a section gang for a railroad and as a historian for the Southern Pacific Railway.
Hofsomer’s publications are available through local book stores.
