DNR Cites Two Possible Factors In Big Spirit Fish Kill

November 22, 2014

(Orleans)– Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources say a fish kill that took place this past weekend on Big Spirit Lake was probably the result of two factors.

Officials received several reports Saturday of dead fish washing up on the south side of Big Spirit Lake.

Mike Hawkins, a fisheries Biologist for the DNR, says a combination of extremely warm water temperatures and a die off of some algae could have resulted in some very low oxygen content, resulting in the fish kill.

He says it’s nothing to be overly concerned about, saying such fish kills can be fairly typical at this time of year.

Smaller fish such as minnows, darters and small perch were affected the most.

A small fish kill was also reported over the weekend on Little Spirit Lake.
